Axel Springer uses Purple DS for the majority of magazine titles in Germany
Axel Springer SE is a listed publishing group with a number of multimedia brands such as Bild, Die Welt and Rolling Stone.
Purple DS App
Magazine publishing software for publisher
Axel Springer, one of Europe’s largest publishers, is based in Berlin and Hamburg. Over the last few years, the once classic publishing house Axel Springer has become a global player in the digital economy. Axel Springer’s best-known print product, alongside Die Welt and Welt am Sonntag, is the family of magazines around Bild, which currently account for around 50% of revenues.
Intuitive creation of apps
Axel Springer Media House shifted all of its Adobe Digital Publishing Suite (DPS) publications to Purple DS. The Axel Springer Media House approached the team of SPRYLAB Purple DS while searching for an alternative digital publishing solution. The publisher was particularly concerned in finding a new way to produce the already existing as well as future online magazines. These online magazines are reworked replicas from print editions, and are published in the Apple Newsstand.
With the switch to a new digital publishing system, it is unavoidable to replace the existing apps in the newsstand. Since the readership should still be able to access old editions in the usual quality, a solution had to be found to efficiently migrate them to the new system.
„We were looking for a completely new solution that would fully replace our previous provider. We placed particular emphasis on providers that would be able to support us with the development of existing issues personally, and also with the establishment of new, automated and efficient production workflows. One of our pivotal arguments for the Purple DS publishing suite was the scalability of e-publishing projects – from simple PDF replicas to high-quality, interactive online magazines, and exciting scrollytelling publications – all in one system”, says Remco Meyer, Senior Product Manager Mobile & Special Projects at Axel Springer Media House Berlin.
“Creating the new newsstand apps with Purple DS was very simple and intuitive. The newsstand could easily be adapted to our magazine style guides. Also, managing the migrated issues and setting up additional options such as coupons proved to be absolutely effortless.”

Fast conversion from 62 Adobe DPS issues to Purple DS
The option to recreate the old issues in Purple DS would have been too time-consuming. Therefore, the team at SPRYLAB Purple DS developed an import interface that automatically transfers Adobe DPS folios into Purple DS files. All functions and extensions from the folios could be taken over without restriction.
The main criterion for migration was to maintain high quality. This also includes the fact that the countless extensions such as media players, animations and interactions are still available without restriction. The import was adapted to the respective elements and transformed into Purple DS elements. The production of new editions is efficient and flexible.
