As one of Europe's largest publishing houses, Axel Springer Verlag has its headquarters in Berlin and Hamburg. The once classic publishing house Axel Springer has become a global player in the digital economy in recent years. In addition to Die Welt and Welt am Sonntag, Axel Springer's best-known print property is above all the family of magazines around Bild, which currently account for around 50% of sales.

Intuitive creation of kiosk apps

Axel Springer Mediahouse Berlin switched all its publications from the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite (DPS) to Purple. In search of an alternative digital publishing solution, Axel Springer Mediahouse Berlin approached the Purple team. In particular, the publisher was looking for a new solution to produce its existing and future eMagazines. The eMagazines are edited replicas of the print editions that are published in the Apple Newsstand.

With the switch to a new digital publishing system, it is unavoidable to replace the existing apps in the newsstand. As the readership should still be able to access old issues in the usual quality, a solution had to be found to migrate them efficiently to the new system.

"We were looking for a fully-fledged replacement for our previous solution. In particular, we were looking for a provider that could support us personally in the further development of existing publications and help us to establish new, automated and efficient production workflows. The ability to scale ePublishing projects from simple PDF replicas to high-quality, interactive eMagazines and exciting scrollytelling publications with just one system was one of our decisive arguments in favor of the Purple Publishing Suite," says Remco Meyer, Senior Product Manager Mobile & Special Projects at Axel Springer Mediahouse Berlin.

The project at a glance

Quick conversion of existing 62 Adobe DPS outputs

The option of recreating the old outputs in Purple DS would have been too time-consuming. So the Purple DS team developed an import interface that automatically transforms Adobe DPS Folios into Purple DS files. All functions and extensions from the folios could be transferred without restriction.

The most important criterion for the migration was to maintain the high quality. This also includes that the countless extensions such as media players, animations and interactions are still available without restriction. The import was adapted to the respective elements and transformed into Purple DS elements. The production of new editions turns out to be efficient and flexible.

  • Purple DS is used for all magazine titles
  • The titles were migrated from Adobe DPS
  • Apps: iOS and Android for tablet & smartphone
  • Axel Springer uses various Purple DS workflows
  • Automatic PDF upload (e.g. ComputerBILD)
  • Automatically from the CMS (e.g. AutoBILD feed)
  • Partially automated on InDesign basis (e.g. AutoBILD)
  • PixelPerfect (e.g. RollingStone)
